Chapter 3: Eight Years Later
“I see the one you mean…”
“Yes, the young Dragon, Strato.”
“He’s definitely grown stronger, taking control of the conference.”
“We must watch out for him…”
******************************************************************************
It’s been 8 years since I became an Elemental. The others see me as a leader because of a few events that happened over the past 8 years, although our Draconic Elemental, a Dragon named Draco (ironic, right?), doesn’t approve. I’ve also been destroying a lot of Hallows and ascending like crazy. My Ascension Level is 8 right now.
For those who don’t know, ascending is like a kind of evolution for us. Our powers grow stronger and our bodies change slightly, too. We even gain new combat abilities, and sometimes, a new skill that can help us greatly in the middle of a battle.
Max has also ascended a lot, up to my level, and now he's gained the ability to fly, which is unheard of for his Avatar, an Onza. It's one of the only natural hybrid species, being a cross between a cat and a wolf. With his recent development, he's gained a lot of combat abilities that utilize his wings, his favorite being "Jumping Horizon". He flies up into the air, so far that his target can't see him, then he slams them from up above with his massive claws.
During this period of time, I've defeated 3 people trying to go for my spot, one being Xerxes, who eventually flipped his lid and ran off to an area in the kingdom called the Victory Canyon, never to be heard from again. The Malefic Army has been slowly getting stronger, and eventually, our Dark Elemental, Michael, gave in to their influence and betrayed us. I ended up facing him one-on-one, and after a brutal fight, I slayed him with a silver blade crafted by Steele. It's kinda sad, really. He was one of my friends down on Earth, and to have to defeat one of your own allies really messes with you. The worst part was dealing with his family, whom we had Seera, our Psychic Elemental, mind-wipe so they had no recollection of having a son.
After that happened, I ended up saving Rayna from the aforementioned Dragon trying to get his way with her. I caught him in one of the darker parts of Ascension City, which explained why no one would answer her calls for help. Draco and I had a little scrape, but despite being a veteran, I took him down, having released my Avatar Awakening down his throat. He's still alive, but his voice will never be the same.
Since then, Rayna and I have become an item. We were already good friends since our first conference, and Max and I even found out that she goes to our school. We started hanging out and slaying Hallows after dark, and I guess we started our own little circle. Max even found love in the form of another one of the new girls, the Ice Elemental, who was a Panther avatar called Jessica.
Life was good, until another event happened that shook the entire kingdom.
Our king, Ethan, was murdered.
The cause of death was a stab wound, but no one could figure out who did it. But we understood why he was a target. Besides being the ruler of the Kingdom of Genesis, Ethan was an entirely different kind of Element. He was the only Dragon born with the Mystic Element, and after some research, we found that it was a combination of every single element known to us, and was always strong against every element, except for itself. It explained his unique combat strategies, and why he'd always use abilities like "Mystic Blade" and "White Judgment".
It wasn't just the kingdom that suffered. Ethan was my mentor; he taught me almost everything I know about kicking ass. Through my eyes, he was like a father. That day, I swore to destroy whoever had killed him. And I knew that I had to sharpen my knowledge on the world we inhabited and it's inhabitants.
I began to research the kingdom itself, and I found out about the ones who started the Half-blood species. They were called the "Pure-bloods", and they're the reason for our hybridization with humanity. After digging a little deeper, I found info on the beings that created the Pure-bloods. There were 4 of them, called Paragons, and they used the energy of a being called the Original One to create our race and build the entire kingdom just for us. All of them possessed the Mystic Element, as well as one of the 4 Root Elements: Fire, Ice, Wind, and Electricity.
The kingdom went up on high alert since Ethan's death, and our main defenses have been so heavily fortified that not even a cockroach can slip through. It's completely kept a hold on all ther shady characters coming in and out of the city, and so far it's been nothing but peace.
At least, until a few months ago when Emo came into the picture.
OK, before you go, "Oh my Genesis, an Emo? Really, nigga?", that's her actual name. I don't exactly know how she got it, but she's a Necromancer, one of the few Avatar species bound to the Malefic Army. She mainly uses her ghostly abilities to take control of other Half-bloods and use them to take down her opponents.
The first time we met, she tried to take me at my home down on Earth. Max and I were hanging out in our backyard, having a heated discussion about whether the Hulk could destroy Thor, when the area cooled off immensely. Max and I could tell something was up, so we went into our Avatar Forms and prepared for battle.
It was quiet for some time before Max was slammed with a burst of dark energy, which I recognized as a Ghost-element ability called Spirit Shot. He sprawled forward, but flipped back onto his hind feet.
"Where are you?!" I shouted, blades drawn. "Come out!"
Emo revealed herself, and I knew she wasn't just an ordinary Ghost-element. Acting on instinct, I fired a Thunderbolt at her, sending her flying into the fence surrounding the backyard. She got back up and used Shadow Force, disappearing from view. I couldn't do anything but try and defend from her attack, and a few moments later, I was slammed hard in the back and sent face first into the dirt.
As soon as she reappeared, Max tried to cover me with a Water Blast attack, but she completely dodged it and used her signature ability, Spirit Bond, to possess Max and claim his body as her own. Before I knew it, I was fighting my partner.
"Hahaha! Unless you want your partner to die, I suggest you surrender yourself to me, Strato Abyss," Emo said, cackling.
"I don't know who you think you are, but I never give in!" I shouted, having built up enough power and rage. I already knew a way around Spirit Bond. Using a physical attack would destroy the possessed, but using a Magic attack with a high enough power level would separate the two, allowing me to destroy this witch once and for all.
I cupped my hands behind my back and charged power until I shouted, "Bolt Blast!!" and unleashed my Avatar Awakening, scoring a direct hit and separating Emo and Max. Max was OK, but defeated, and he reverted to his human form.
"OK!! Now I'm really angry!!" Emo shouted. "Prepare to die!! Malefic Ascent!!"
I gasped as a massive wave of energy exploded around Emo, giving her a massive boost to all of her stats. Malefic Ascent was one of the many Malefic-element abilities out there, which increased all of the user's stats except for HP by 500. However, out of sheer rage, she forgot that it left the user immobile for a short period of time in order to charge up the energy. I knew I had to stop her before the attack was complete, and I had just the right ability to do so. An ability Ethan taught me, called "Mystic Light".
Mystic Light is (guess what?!) a Mystic-element ability that harnesses all of the user's energy and releases it in one massive burst that hits all opponents, at the cost of leaving the user tired as hell afterwards and unable to move for a bit.
The look on Emo's face was almost as priceless as the one on Draco's face once I silenced him with a Bolt Blast. She was completely decimated, returning to her human disguise, still smoking from the harshness of the attack.
"Gah...you haven't seen the last of me," she said before melting into the shadows.
We later found out that Emo was one of the two commanders of the Malefic Army, and since that day, she's been dogging us at every step. Every time a massive group of Hallows is reported, she's usually the one behind it. We haven't seen her as of late, and we're hoping that it stays that way.
Now, for the present day events. A crowning ceremony is about to go on in Ascension City for our new king. He's a Light-element Dragon going by the name Dynal. The only one who seemed out of the loop was Max, so I decided to drop by his home on Earth and remind him.
I flew over to his house, stopping in the air and looking down on it from above. I could see him and Dynal on the ground, in their Avatar forms, having a massive brawl from the looks of it. Max had his claws out and clashing with the blades infused on Dynal's arms. Eventually, Dynal sent out a massive explosion of light, and I covered my eyes, recognizing it as a Light-element Avatar Awakening called Burning Sunlight. As soon as I uncovered my eyes, Max was on the ground, defeated and back in his human form.
"NO!! You'll pay for that!" I shouted, blasting off towards the ground, blades drawn. Dynal noticed me almost immediately and put his blades up to guard, and I slammed into him, pushing him back. I jumped off and launched a Thunderbolt attack, making direct contact with him and reverting him to his human form.
"Hey, Strato! What are you doing?!" I heard Max shout. I turned around to see my partner standing there with his arms crossed.
"Yeah, what gives?" Dynal grunted, standing up and brushing himself off. "Max and I were just having a friendly sparring match."
"So...no harm done?" I said sheepishly, returning to my human form. "Sorry, but from my point of view, it looked like you two were out for each other's heads."
"Same as you when we fight," Max countered.
"Whatever," I said, shrugging my shoulders and looking at Dynal. "So, have you told him about the ceremony yet?"
"Yeah, he already filled me in," Max said. "It's being held tonight, right?"
"That's right," Dynal said, nodding. "Every Half-blood and Pure-blood's going to be there. I suggest you two do the same. I have something wonderful planned for those who attend."
"Sure thing," I said. "I'll see you guys later tonight."
With that, I transformed and flew off, back to my own home.
